Brain Continued to Evolve As Recently As 5,800 Years

Lahn and his colleagues examined two genes, named microcephalin and ASPM, that are connected to brain size. If those genes don't work, babies are born with small brains, called microcephaly.

Using DNA samples from ethnically diverse populations, Lahn's team identified a collection of variations in each gene that occurred with unusually high frequency.

Researchers said the frequency of the variations probably was due to natural selection, where favorable genetic changes gain a foothold and begin to spread.

For the microcephalin gene, the variation arose about 37,000 years ago, about the time period when art, music and tool-making were emerging, Lahn said. For ASPM, the variation arose about 5,800 years ago, roughly correlating with the development of written language, the spread of agriculture and development of cities.

"The genetic evolution of humans in the very recent past might in some ways be linked to the cultural evolution," Lahn said

This is quite interesting, because many thought brain evolved some thoudand years ago and we use same brain since then.
This study shows we are getting smarter, because of brain evolution in recent.
This means we can make us even smarter by modifying "smart genes".
So, I am limited to my own brain? Is it impossible to think as future human?

Sidney Crosby Era Officially Starts

Crosby has been touted as another Wayne Gretzky or Lemieux, who didn't quibble with that notion.

"I think so. Not only (because of) his talent, but the way he thinks about the game," Lemieux said. "He's dedicated to the game of hockey. A lot of guys have had talent in the past, but to put the mind that he has with his talent is special."

Apple eBook coming?

Tomorrow Apple will be announcing something big.People are talking about iPod Video and iTunes Phone.Probably I also think the announcement is about one of these.

But if not these, and something bigger. eBook is the only the answer. The device you can carry one thousand books. The device you can take a note. The device which has decent size of screen, but thin, you don't mind carrying everyday, and still does not run out of battery. You can buy novels and most importantly thick and heavy textbooks from iTunes Book Store. This will change everything especially bright kid's life.

I hope Apple introduce this device tomorrow.
Maybe not tomorrow, but I hope they will pull this off.

Sidney Crosby was drafted #1 in 2005 entry draft by Pittsburgh Penguins.
He is, many consider to be, the next one since Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux dominated on ice in 70's and 80's.

At first show, I was near billy-craze Japanese girl always screams when Billy comes near. She threw kiss at him, and he gave back kiss to her. Because Billy notice this girl (maybe already knew each other) and look at her very often, I thought Billy actually looking at me. We were staring at each other! It was wonderful to see Billy so close!

Second day, I stand in the middle of the concert hall, and it was better than first day show for me.
Billy is still rocking, strange, exciting!

Birth-Controled Pills Maybe Dangerous to Baby

Let's not use them. We have condom!
Pregnant women could be unwittingly exposing their unborn children to harmful amounts of the hormone oestrogen. Researchers have demonstrated that tiny quantities of this hormone, found in birth-control pills and some plastics, can cause serious deformities in male mouse fetuses.

Earth holding onto Sun's Heat

Article from Scientific American.
Nasa Scientist made climate model that calculates 0.6 watt per square meter of energy is Earth holding right now.
This means that we must really act right now to reduce the usage of energy or find better energy source.

"The most effective actions that we could take now are strong efforts to improve energy efficiency, employ renewable energies, and reduce air pollutants, especially fugitive methane, other ozone precursors, and black carbon (soot)," Hansen remarks. "[In] the long-run we will need either carbon-free power sources or we will need to capture and sequester CO2.

Slumbering Fruit Flies Shed Light on Genetics of Sleep Needs

Amount of sleep one needs is genetical. Potassium ion's concentration could affect sleep in humans.

From sleep hogs to early birds, people have a wide range of shut-eye needs. Now researchers report in the journal Nature that they have identified a single gene in fruit flies that determines how much rest the creatures require. Because humans carry a similar gene, the findings may shed light on the mechanisms and functions of sleep...

Walking Shade Video Review

This is review for the music video of Walking Shade; the song from Billy Corgan's coming new album TheFutureEmbrace.

Walking Shade maybe my favourite one side by side with Tonight, Tonight.
The song is never-heard-before structure and complex, but I believe it is succeeding.

Zwan's "Honestly" and "Lyric" was so powerful and made me happy, but it wasn't quite billy and new. (I didn't think this way in zwan era).

Walking Shade is unlike others, there isn't really a climax and ending. I feel maybe that is why I feel this is so true to him and reality.

I am watching (Walking Shade) again and again so many times now, and that makes me wonder if he really got something this time.

Walking Shade - Billy Corgan

I just watched the video of Walking Shade.
It is so beautiful!
I have never heard song like Walking Shade.
It is like a mixture of feelings, but feelings just doesn't last long, constantly shifting from one to another. I think in this sense it is very real and true.
Video is so beautiful. My favourite video is Tonight Tonight, and it made me his fan.
But this one might become the best video for me!
It is like I am falling in love once again!

I don't know if I am allowed here, but here is the link to download.

It wasn't proper to use "feeling". Maybe "emotion" is better to be used...
I felt that the song changes its melody (or tune), and the new melody does not last long as I expected as usual songs. Some says that you are trying to do too many things at once, but I believe it is not. I felt that the song is emotionally changing and shifting, and there isn't final state of emotion and answer.
I hope this explains my feeling about the song better...

Oldest Homo Sapiens is from Ethiopia, Africa.

190,000 years ago in Ethiopia, our ancestor was born. Probably it looked very much like us, had brain as big as ours'.
So we then splead to all the places, and killed off another Homo Sapiens, Neanderthal and possibly more apes, which are extinct now. Anthropology is fun, cause it let us imagine things that really happened.

The article on Nature.

This skull, called Omo II, is from the earliest known member of our species.
© Michael Day
Two Ethiopian fossils have been crowned as the oldest known members of our species. An estimated 195,000 years old, the pair were witness to the earliest days of Homo sapiens.

The discovery adds yet more weight to the argument that Africa, and Ethiopia in particular, was the birthplace of humans. The dating sits well with genetic analyses of modern populations, which suggest that H. sapiens first appeared in Africa around 200,000 years ago.

Global Consciousness - Random generators placed in many places of the world can detects the future events.

Creative Commons - Woman's Right Video

Motherhood by Choice is the video about woman's right and abortion. This story is told with the American history of woman's right. Quite long, but very important.

I think a woman should have the choice of her own body. People should have all the right except things affecting other's right to live or affecting their health.

The same answer to gay couple marriage, or the right to have almost the same living as straight marriage couples.

The answers seem so obvious to me.

I wonder why human make same mistakes. Is this because we care our history too little?, or we have limitations and need to wait for another evolution to happen? The time takes care of this our problems? Or our technology destroy us first?

We must really figure this out!

Bad Movies

Bad Movies is great place to find movies to entertain your friend.
There are reviews, images, and videos.

Early Mammal Ate Dinosaurs.

It was 130 million years ago, and mammals were relatively small at that time, but they managed to hunt dinosaur and eat them!

This means Dinosaurs had predetors other than dinosaurs. This is remarkable finding.

I wonder if someday we can really bring them alive again like in Jurassic Park. I wonder what the odd for this.

Next, I want to see Methane's river in Titan on video.

Coffee: Shade Grown Mexico (Starbucks)

My first MILD category coffee from Starbucks.
Its label says, "CRISP & REFRESHING".
I agree with the label very much, because it doesn't have unique aroma, and it is waterly.
But this label is not the same as mine. Mine does not have "DECAF". I could not find same label.

Starbucks has three categories of coffee; MILD, SMOOTH, BOLD.
MILD coffee has little aroma and body.
SMOOTH has aroma, but little body.
BOLD has rich aroma and strong body.

Shade Grown Mexico is a MILD one. I recommend drinking at night.
But if you want to enjoy more flavour, this is not the choice.

Monday, January 17, 2005

Coffee: Mocha Harrar (GIN-NO-MAME COFFEE)

I like it.
Its aroma is unique, not bitter and has weak acidity.
If I compare with Starbucks coffee, this is categorized SMOOTH.
I liked GUATEMALA ANTIGUA of Starbucks and I liked this too.
I must like SMOOTH category coffee.

Roast: City Roast (2/5)

The talk about Hayao Miyazaki

http://www.newyorker.com/online/content/?050117on_onlineonly01

Margaret Talbot who writes about Hayao Miyazaki, the japanese animation creator and director of film such as Spirited Away, talks about him in this interview by New Yorker. Hayao Miyazaki doesn't usually do interviews, so this is very interesting to read.

After I read this, it made me want to go see his new film, "Howl, the Walking Castle", eventhough people's reaction is not very good.

Here is what I learned about Hayao Miyazaki.

  • He's very worried about kids consuming too much media, and thinks that they should watch a movie like "Totoro" no more than once a year.

  • He is perhaps a pessimistic person, but has great vitality and a great respect and fondness for children. He wants them to make their own judgments about the world. He doesn’t want to swamp them with premature cynicism.

  • He is an intense workaholic. The early days of their studio, Studio Ghibli, Miyazaki would work from 9 a.m. to 4:30 a.m., and that in recent years he has mellowed somewhat and goes home at midnight.

  • His idea of a vacation was a nap.

  • He isn't a fan of computer animation. He really favors the (now) old-fashioned method of hand drawing.

  • John Lasseter of Pixar is his friend.

Coffee: Guatemala Antigua (Starbucks)

"Elegant and intriguing." - Starbucks.
I think this line explained very well. Its aroma and the taste should match with the mood in tea time.
This coffee is the first coffe from starbucks' Smooth category. It is indeed very smooth!

Coffee: Papua New Guinea Sigri AA (GIN-NO-MAME COFFEE)

Oh, its acidity was very strong. I don't know if it is because of the roasting or it is really sour kind.
I did not like it, but I would like to try one with stronger roast.
This coffee bean is same as Blue Mountain No.1, but growed in Papua New Guinea.

update:
I tried it 2 days later, the acidity was weaker and tasted better.

Roast: City Roast (2/5)
Price: 620 Yen (100g)
